(age 12 and up readers)

After her mom’s sudden death, twelve-year-old Shannon McLean has to move from the US to the English countryside to live with her mysterious father, Connor McLean, whom she hasn’t seen since she was a baby. Soon she discovers that he doesn’t want her around and her moving into his huge manor, Greyman Hill, is nothing more to him than a compulsory deal. But if he does not exactly give her a warm welcome, his servant Robert is most likely an incarnation of evil. He runs the house with an iron touch and makes everyone who works there his little puppets.

Weird things start to happen and the whole place scares the crap out of Shannon. Her dad can control her just by looking at her. The walls are full of secret passages and apparently she has the talent to awaken the ghosts in them. Every day is worse than the day before and she wants badly to run away but discovers it’s impossible. If she wants to stay alive she has to do exactly as her dad says or else she will not only jeopardize her own life but also the lives of the people around her.

While Shannon struggles to find the magic inside her, Connor is slowly turning into a demon. One carelessly spoken word from her could either save or destroy them both. In the end she has to decide whether to save herself and her loved ones, or lose her dad to the darkness and evil that threaten to eat his soul.

What was the inspiration behind Black Diamond?  Jennifer says:

It all started from a birthday party invitation to England’s countryside. The minute I Googled the party venue and saw the pictures, my fingers started to tickle and I had to start writing. Endless green fields, old dry-stone walls, mysterious woods, huge stone manors…Yes, I lost my heart to Burford long before I actually visited it and I knew the idea of young witches and demons would haunt me until I’d give in and put it on the paper. Six months later the first draft of Black Diamond was ready and in January 2013 it actually went live and was published in Amazon worldwide.

I hope you enjoy the story as much as I enjoyed writing it!

Jennifer

Read on for an Excerpt (Chapter Five):

“Shannon,” Connor said from the doorway. It looked like he had been waiting for her.

Shannon said nothing and tried to pass him.

He blocked her way but didn’t touch her. “Shannon,” he said again, but this time danger lurked in his voice.

She swallowed. Connor’s eyes were so dark and something horrible gleamed behind them. She froze. She could’ve tried to push past him, but his eyes warned her not to even try anything like that, so she lifted her head and met his eyes. “Connor,” she said, and was proud that her voice didn’t shake.

Connor sighed heavily. “Shannon, Shannon, Shannon. What am I going to do with you?”

“You could start by letting me go,” she suggested quietly.

Connor shook his head. “Can’t do that.”

“Can’t or won’t?” Shannon asked and felt the courage coming back to her body.

Connor was quiet. The air around him seemed so dark. Almost like he was a black hole that absorbed all the light around him. He was dressed all in black and looked more like a devil than a human.

Shannon could see Robert grinning wickedly behind him. Her mind was screaming that she should be deadly afraid of this man in front of her, but she wasn’t. She was more afraid of the man behind him and somehow Connor seemed to be the safer choice. There was nothing human in Robert. It was like he was waiting for Connor to strike her down and feast on her dead body. He stared at them with his small, cold, mean eyes and seemed to be encouraging Connor to harm her.

Connor did nothing. After a very uncomfortably long time he shooed Robert away with his hand. “Both,” he said and moved out of her way.

She had almost forgotten what she had asked, but when Connor moved, she moved as well, carefully, from the outside to the inside of the house. He followed. She was scared of him, but there was something so vulnerable in him just then that she couldn’t leave him alone. After all, he was her dad. Robert was gone, thank God, so she dared to speak to him more openly than she had thought possible. “What do you mean? This is your house and I’m your daughter. You can do whatever you want,” she said and hoped she hadn’t gone too far.

“I know. It’s just that I’m no good with little girls like you, and it’s been so long since I remembered what it feels like to be a—” He stopped and looked at her like he was suffering.

“To be what?” Shannon whispered, afraid to hear the answer.

Connor stared into her blue eyes and everything vulnerable was gone from him. He looked even scarier than before. The candles burned brightly around them and when he spoke, their flames flashed like someone had thrown something into them. “Never mind. Just stay away from me and obey my orders. If I tell you to eat, you’ll eat and so on, okay?”

“No! It’s not okay!” Shannon shouted. Tears burned behind her eyes. “You can’t tell me what to do! I’m not a baby anymore!”

“You’ll do what I tell you to do or you’ll be sorry for the day you were born!” Connor thundered and something touched Shannon’s hair. It felt like a spider web but it was really cold. It could’ve been somebody’s bony fingers as well, but whatever it was made her scream.

She ran upstairs, scared to death. If she had turned and looked behind she would’ve seen the pain in her father’s eyes and how beaten he looked, but she didn’t. She ran for her life, and when she reached her room she slammed the door behind her, turned the key in the lock, and hid in her bed. She pulled the blanket over her head and sat under it shaking and crying. What kind of place was this? And what was her dad? Not who but what!

“This is just a dream,” she whispered to herself. “Just a dream.”

She tried to calm herself down. She remembered a horror movie she had once watched with her best friend. Mom hadn’t known, of course. This place and these people were just like it. Maybe worse. This was not a movie. This was real and she was trapped. She wondered why Connor had allowed her to come there. He obviously didn’t want her there and for some reason was stuck with her now. But one thing was sure. She was not safe and she needed to get away. If she stayed, something terrible would happen. She was sure of that. Something beyond her imagination, and she didn’t want to find out what it was.

She lowered the blanket a little. She was still alone. No one had followed her and her room looked as white as it had before. There was no threat in there and she felt stupid. Maybe it was just her mind playing tricks with her.

“Now you are being stupid,” she whispered. This was not a trick. This was true.

She got up and tried the doorknob. It was still locked. She sat on the bed and glanced at the clock. It was 2 p.m. What in the world was she supposed to do for the rest of the day? She let her hand slide over the pillars on her amazing canopy bed. The wood felt smooth under her hands. It was such a shame they had painted the old bed white. She was sure that it would’ve been stunning in its natural oak color. Her hand stopped. She had felt something. Some kind of mark or engraving. She looked closer, searching for the mark. There it was. An upward-pointing triangle. What did it mean? Was it some kind of ancient symbol, or had it been made by someone that had been held in this room as a prisoner? How exciting! She forgot her fears and searched the other pillars.

Each one of them had the same triangle. She scratched one with her nail. The triangle had originally been red and looked like a campfire. She tried to reveal more of it, but the paint was so thick that all she managed to do was break her nails. She scanned the room. There had to be something sharp. Scissors, maybe, or some cutlery. She found nothing.

She emptied her toilet case and found her nail file. It wasn’t as sharp as she had hoped, but it was better than nothing. She started to work on the paint. The triangle meant fire all right. Soon she had managed to reveal all four triangles, and there was no mistake that they could be pyramids or mathematical triangles. The wood was colored red and the edges of the triangle were rough so they looked like flames. They looked very old. Ancient, actually.

She decided to search the rest of the room. She hoped that she would find a clue to what these triangles meant. She didn’t. She found something much more interesting.

In the middle of the window was a pentagram. It was a weird-looking one but there was no mistake. It was a pentagram. And she found a triangle on the ceiling as well. She almost missed it, as it was tiny and didn’t look the same as the others. She was thrilled. This was better than treasure hunting! She moved the furniture and searched every inch of the room. She dug through all the drawers and closets. She crawled on the floor like a maniac, and that’s where Lily found her.

“Are you all right, Miss?” she asked in her quiet voice.

Shannon freaked out. “How did you get in? The door was locked! I’m sure of it!”

Lily shrugged and showed her the tattooed locks on her palms. Shannon stared at them, and when she finally understood what Lily meant, she was horrified. She wasn’t safe even in her room. It was just an illusion. Connor and his people could get through any door. It didn’t matter if it were locked or not.

Lily stared at the floor and Shannon could swear she saw some red in her cheeks. Good! She was supposed to feel embarrassed. “I don’t want you to come into my room like that. You could at least knock, you know,” she snapped.

Lily nodded and hid her hands behind her back. “I did knock, but Lord Connor’s order was to make sure that you’ll be downstairs at seven o’clock sharp. And it’s ten to seven.”

Shannon glanced at her watch. It really was almost seven. She had spent almost five hours triangle hunting. Her stomach rumbled. She hadn’t eaten anything but an apple all day and she was really hungry. She knew that Lily meant no harm, so she got up and prepared to follow her.

Lily looked at her in shock. “You can’t come to dinner like that,” she said in horror.

Shannon glanced at herself. She was a little bit dusty, she admitted, but so what? She wasn’t going to change her clothes for Connor.

Lily didn’t move. She looked like she could die any minute. Shannon felt sorry for her and shrugged. “Whatever. Give me two minutes and I’ll be ready,” she said.

Lily smiled and whispered, “A dress. You should wear a dress.”

Shannon winced and swallowed the nasty response she was tempted to give. Lily looked so miserable that she didn’t want to make it worse. In silence she changed into clean jeans and a new T-shirt that said ‘It’s better to be dead than a sissy’ on the front. Lily looked even more terrified, but Shannon didn’t care.

The dining room was set for three again. The candles burned and the table was full of delicious-looking food. This time, however, Shannon didn’t have the pleasure of eating alone. Connor sat at the head of the table and looked at her T-shirt in amusement.

He didn’t look as dangerous as earlier, but this time Shannon knew to be wary and didn’t want to irritate him. So she took all the food that the pale women put on her plate. She didn’t eat it, though. She threw it under the table every time Connor looked away, as she was convinced it was poisoned.

The third seat was still empty. Shannon wanted to ask who was supposed to sit there, but Connor looked so absent that she didn’t want to disturb him. It was weird to sit and pretend to be eating. Connor hadn’t said a word since she came into the room, and she didn’t want to draw his attention to her and the food she was throwing on the floor. Yes, she knew it was stupid and she would get caught in time, but at least she would be safe tonight.

Eventually, Connor finished his dinner and got up. He nodded at Shannon, looking pleased, and she blushed. How pleased would he be when he found out what she had done? She got up as well. She would’ve thanked the women, but they were nowhere to be seen, so she decided to go to her room and continue her search for triangles. However, this time she moved a heavy bureau in front of the door and hoped it would slow down whoever tried to come into her room without an invitation.

She stared at the pentagram on the window. She traced its lines with a finger and glanced out absentmindedly. She froze. Someone was moving in the forest. She gasped. A faint light flashed between the trees and then faded. The forest was as black as it had been a minute ago. Was it Connor? Or some of his servants? Whoever it was obviously didn’t want to be seen. She kept staring and there it was again. It looked like a flashlight and now she was sure that someone was walking in the forest.

“Run, you idiot,” she whispered. She knew she couldn’t warn that person but wished she could. Who would be so stupid to go into the forest like that in the middle of the night? Well, almost the middle of the night. It was nine o’clock, so it wasn’t technically the middle, but it was so dark that it could’ve been. She wished she had a telescope. The light seemed to follow some kind of path, maybe the same as she had walked earlier. And then it stopped in the middle of the forest. Other lights joined it and for a second there was a bright flash that lit the trees and the sky above them, and then it was all black.

She stared at the forest for a long time but there was no more light. Not even a dim one. Oh my God, she thought. Maybe they were hikers and had been captured by Connor or Robert, or even by some more horrifying person. She felt hot tears burning her eyes. She wanted to run into the forest and help them, but what could she do? She would only get herself hurt or worse and she had no idea how to help those poor people.

“I’ll go there tomorrow,” she whispered. “I promise. Just hang on in there.” She heard a quiet voice behind her door and froze. “Who is it?”

“Lily,” a quiet voice whispered. “Please, let me in.”

Shannon moved the bureau away and opened the door. Lily stood there holding a bag in her hands. She slipped into the room and glanced around. When she decided it was safe she opened the bag and showed its contents to Shannon. The bag was full of food. Not nicely packed food but messy food that looked similar to what had been served at dinner.

Shannon gasped. “Ew! You cleaned my food! Why did you do it?”

Lily shrugged. “I don’t want him to hurt you.”

“Who? Who would hurt me? Connor? Robert?” Shannon asked, stunned.

Lily looked out of the window and shivered. She couldn’t answer and Shannon didn’t want to press her.

“Thank you,” Shannon said and smiled.

Lily smiled, too. Shyly. “You can’t throw it away. They’ll know and they’ll make you eat it.”

“But it’s poisoned!” Shannon yelled.

“No, it’s not.” Lily took some of the food out of the bag. Slowly, she put it in her mouth and ate it. “You see. It’s not poisoned. It’s just food, and if you don’t eat you’ll lose your strength.”

“So?” Shannon didn’t care anymore.

“Then they’ll get you, too.” Lily was obviously scared that she had said too much.

Shannon touched Lily’s narrow shoulders. “Is that what happened to you?”

Lily shook her head and sniffed. “No. I came here of my own free will. Whatever happens to me is my own fault.”

“I came here willingly, too.”

“Yes. But you didn’t know. I did and I still came.” Lily looked at Shannon’s wide eyes. “None of this is your fault. He shouldn’t have allowed you to come. He shouldn’t.”

Shannon was confused. She had no idea what Lily was talking about but it made her more scared than ever. This place was seriously bad and these people, including her dad, were wacky. And that was putting it nicely. And yet somehow she felt sorry for them. Well, not for Robert, but for Lily and Simon, and maybe a little bit for Connor, too. She wanted to run away. To leave and never come back, but she knew she couldn’t. She literally couldn’t, and if she ever found a way to escape she wasn’t sure that she would. There had to be a way to help them. There had to!

She took Lily’s hands in hers. “I’ll help you. Whatever it takes, I’ll help you. You have my word.”

“No! You don’t understand! There’s no way to help me or the others. We’re in this because we wanted to be! Help yourself and run!” Lily said desperately.

“No, you’re not. Maybe you were at first, but you can’t seriously say that this is what you want. Can you?”

Lily looked at her sadly and shook her head. “No. But I’m in too deep. Nothing can save me. Trust me.”

She showed her palms and Shannon saw the locks move again. She touched one of them and in that second it changed into a black diamond.

Lily gasped sharply. They both stared at her palms. Lily’s eyes got wider. “Oh no! You’re the one! Your life is in danger here! You need to run away. Now, before he finds out about this!”

“What do you mean? I’m not going anywhere!” said Shannon stubbornly.

The black diamond seemed to spin round, and the lock on the other hand seemed to change shape into a black skull.

Lily screamed. And then came the wind.

Hi Scott, in 20 words or less, please tell us more about your book A Soul’s Calling.

A Soul’s Calling is a memoir about a man who listened to his heart instead of reason. It’s a work of narrative non-fiction, part travelogue, part hiking adventure, with shamanism and magic woven throughout.

What was your inspiration to write the book?

The book began as a photoblog and grew organically from there. When I was on the trail, it never struck me that I was going to write a book about my experiences. It was the furthest thing from my mind. Had I any inkling, I would have taken better notes along the way. I would have taken more photographs, too

When I returned from Nepal, it took me a good two weeks before I wanted anything to do with the trip. I let my duffle bag and daypack just lay in the center of the living room floor, with everything stuffed inside them. When I recovered and began to re-engage life, I started looking at my photos. It didn’t take long before I started posting some of the photos to a WordPress blog. The posts grew to include excerpts from my journal. The journal excerpts grew to having narratives. The first narratives were short, but I think it was installment ten or twelve that wound up being 5000 words long and resembling a chapter. That was when I asked myself, “Hm. I’m not writing a book am I?” But that was too crazy an idea for me to accept. So I didn’t.

After several more weeks went by, I looked up from my word processor and found that I had written another 20,000 words. By this time it was early January 2012 and something very powerful had taken hold over me. Something burned deep inside me, insisting I write every day. It was only then that I allowed myself to acknowledge and surrender to the process of writing a book. There seemed little choice in the matter for me. There was a story that needed to come out. So, I wrote.

Who is your targeted audience?

Women. A woman’s sense of intuition tends to be stronger than man’s. That’s probably an unfair thing to say, but I think it’s true. I think women will come to A Soul’s Calling with a much more open frame of mind. A Soul’s Calling isn’t meant to be read with a one plus one equals two mentality. The book won’t work that way. The only way the book works is by accepting one of the fundamental principles that fuels the book. That nothing is impossible no matter how improbable it may seem. And in order to accept that, we must be able to get in touch with our intuition. We must be able to listen to our hearts.

Do you have a favorite place you go to for inspiration or a favorite activity?

Yes, I have two. The shower. Or, I take a walk. Both really help me get out of my head and in a place where I can engage my muse.

Do you have a most creative time of day?

First thing in the morning. If I don’t get the words out after my morning coffee, they’re likely to remain trapped inside me for another day. I can edit and polish in the afternoon. But for new material, it has to be first thing in the morning.

Being a writer can be lonely.  Do you have a support network?

I have no support network. It was just me, my muse, and the blank page. If I had just one encouraging person rooting me on in the background while I was writing A Soul’s Calling, it would have been easier to write. I’d go through these daily episodes of being riddled with self doubt. They were awful to the point that they were debilitating. I felt like I had no business writing at all. I was tempted to stop, to quit writing but every time I did, something inside me wouldn’t allow it. Still, it took a lot of commitment and will power to keep writing. It would have been much easier to have given up.

What has been the best part of your writing journey so far?

Discovering that I want to get up every morning and write. Just write. I think, I hope, that I’ve finally found my place in this world.

Do you have a favorite book?

My favorite book is the type that you find yourself constantly turning the pages, to discover what happens next, and when you’re getting near the end, you find that you don’t want to leave the world the author created, your sad to have to say good-bye. These are the books that are magical to me. They’re a rare find, too. But one such book was Paul Coelho’s The Alchemist. As soon as I picked it up, I got the sense that his book was going to resonate deeply with me. So I read it slowly, devouring each word like it was a precious, scrumptious morsel.

What are you reading now?

A couple months back I read Treasure Island. What a phenomenal book. I can’t say enough good things about it. Robert Louis Stevenson’s prose painted an astonishingly amazing picture throughout. And then in February, just before this interview, I read Madeline Miller’s, The Song of Achilles. I’m a huge mythology buff which is what drew me to her book in the first place. I wasn’t sure how she was going to bring the book to an end, but she handled it with such grace. The last thirty pages had me in awe.

Thank you Scott. Do blog readers have any recommendations for support networks for Scott?

Scott has kindly offered an e-copy of A Soul’s Calling to one of Jera’s Jamboree readers.

ASoulsCallingBookCoverA Soul’s Calling is a memoir about a man who listened to his heart instead of reason. Scott, a forty-something attorney, is average in every way except one. He has a connection to the Other Side. He speaks to Spirit and Spirit speaks to him. He sees, hears, and interacts with an invisible realm that is beyond ordinary human perception. When Scott learns his soul has been spiritually compromised he travels to the ancient kingdom of Nepal to win it back. Once there, he hikes the Himalaya carrying a mysterious bundle and a stick laden with prayers from Luminous Beings hoping to come face to face with the greatest mountain on earth: Mount Everest. As his journey unfolds, Scott is called on to battle his fear of heights, the thin air, and his physical limitations. A Soul’s Calling transports readers to the rugged but enchanting Khumbu Valley where mountains speak and nature is imbued with a special kind of magic. The novel is an inspiring modern day adventure that weaves the timeless themes of living an authentic life, the consequences of power, and what a man would do for unrequited love. Powerful, sweeping, and deeply moving, readers will search their hearts as the book draws to a stunning conclusion.

Midnight: a mist-haunted wood with a bad reputation. A sweet sixteen party, and thirteen-year-old Nell is trying to keep her sister, spoilt birthday-girl Gwen, out of trouble. No chance. Trouble finds Gwen and drags her through the mist. Only Nell guesses who’s behind the kidnap – the boy she hoped was her friend, the gorgeous but mysterious Evan River.

Evan is no ordinary boy – he has a secret which will lead Nell to question everything she has always learned from her grandmother’s stories. Evan lives on the fringes of Nell’s world, rarely glimpsed, misunderstood and feared, but a long-simmering showdown between the two worlds is looming …

wpblogheadercrop-004

Mist opens with Nell going into the ancient wood at the back of her home.  Despite her mother’s warnings, she has gone after dark.  She’s following the mystery boy, Evan River.  Conjecturing how it would be if she died there compared to her sister Gwen, we find out how different they are.

Evan River has been at Woodbridge Community College for a short time and is different from the others with his white hair and dark eyes.  The college community do not see him or remember him.  Straight away the reader intuits that Nell is different from everyone else as she does.

An interesting confrontation in the woods with another couple of boys from a neighbouring estate had me hooked!

Evan warns Nell that there is danger that night in the woods …

Nell and Gwen’s mother, Jackie, is a cop.  Due to the recent powercut she is going to have to do a double shift and so the way is prepared for Gwen’s 16th birthday party to take place in the woods.

Nell can feel the danger in her mind and body but when the church clock strikes midnight, she starts to relax, after all, Evan said that “night” and after midnight it’s a new day.  It’s when she relaxes that Gwen is noticed as missing and the adventure begins …

Nell is a fabulous character.  Always on the outside of her community, walking to the beat of a different drum to everyone else, she invents an alter-ego who is more daring and allows her to be something she thinks she isn’t.  As the plot progresses, she becomes stronger and stronger until finally, she comes into her own… still walking to the beat of a different drum but with her head held high and a strong belief in herself.  I adored her!

Another interesting character in Mist is the girls nan, Dru Church.  She rides a Harley and goes to festivals.   As head of the British Folklore Society, we find out her responsibilities go much deeper than the caretaker of the iron house she lives and works in at the edge of the forest.

The relationship that intrigued me the most was that between Nell and her father, Tom Church.  Separated from her mother, Nell doesn’t have a lot of respect for him.  By the end of the story, we realise that neither Nell or Tom’s perception of each other has been accurate and a bond begins to form.  I can’t wait to see how this develops in Frost!

The Elven world is beautifully crafted and has everything you would expect from a fairytale/folktale (with a few surprises too!)  The relationship between Nell and Evan is one that is honest and open despite the differences in their ‘race.’  This is another thing I’m looking forward to being a part of in Frost … their developing connection.

The plot itself is not new, however the subplots are.  The way the author combines the myth with the modern is refreshing and gives it a new feeling.  I loved it that Lettice, who had been taken in 1913, told her side of the story.  Modern technology is used with Google Earth playing a part and the brilliant creation of how Nell uses a modern tool to help her.

You’ll find magic, mystery, suspense and intrigue in Mist.  The characters and their relationships are brilliant and carried me along on Nell’s quest to find her sister.  I’m looking forward to finding out if, and how, it will be possible for the two worlds to live together.  Definitely a YA series to get lost in!

Sacrifices is the second book in the fantasy series Kiera’s Quest targeted at the YA/tween audience.

You can read my review of the first book, Awakenings, here.

Sacrifices opens with Kiera’s friend Joe in the clutches of the Witch Queen.  She is very weak after almost being defeated by Kiera although she has her way of replenishing her energy.

We’re introduced to new character Jude (aka Mouse).  Jude is their guide through the sewer tunnels that will eventually lead them to the Dark Palace.

In our world, the police become involved because Kiera, Joe and Daz are missing. Visiting the school, they try to find out what has happened.  Maddy becomes confused by a peer when she glimpses a different side.

In Sacrifices, we still have plenty of action to engage us but the reader also finds out more about Zakk’s world, Zantar.  We find out who is a ‘friend’ in our world and a surprise twist about who a traitor is.  There’s another surprise with Terrence the terrier … and Uncle Joe is not all that he seems to be.  There are new characters who tie-up with the ones we already know from Awakenings… and a reveal that will make you gasp in surprise!

The climax is nail-biting.  I thought it was a very creative ending leaving the reader on a cliff-hanger!  As Zantar is suffering from the Witch Queen’s experiment, everyone is blasted through the vortex back into our world.  Everyone including the Witch Queen who has made a change that will certainly reverberate through our world.  What is left of Zantar?  What dire consequences will there be in our world with the Witch Queen on the land?

I’m really looking forward to finding out what happens!

Meet Kiera, a pretty, intelligent, and talented girl, brought up by her uncle, and abandoned by her parents. Life is as normal as she believes it to be, apart from the deep ache inside her, telling her she’s different. For years, Kiera had dreams where she ventures into a different reality. She’s not alone; a presence is always there, keeping her safe, yet she feels vulnerable, and hunted.

Zakk, Prince of Zantar, is under the Witch Queen’s spell as she tries to take over his world. He crosses paths with Kiera, and their fates are entwined.

As their journey unravels, she learns that she is not the only one affected by this prince. Who is on her side? Will she find out why she has been chosen? How can someone so young, defeat such evil? Will she find the strength to save the ones closest to her? Will this be Kiera’s only Quest?

Kiera’s Quest is a fantasy series targeted at the YA/tween audience.

Awakenings opens with Zakk in a cave with the Witch Queen.  This is an eerie scene, full of magic and emotion.  This sets the foundation for the action to come.

Next we meet Kiera as she’s doing what all teens do … dancing and singing into her toothbrush … that is until she realises friend Maddy has been silently watching her.  This scene endeared Kiera to me straight away!

We find out about Kiera’s family background and meet her friends as they hang out for the day.  This leads us on to how that although Kiera has this strong friendship group, she feels something is missing and her dreams are different.

What follows is a plot full of action as Kiera begins her quest with a very tight deadline.  She has to unite the rings before Zakk’s birthday otherwise the Witch Queen rules.

I enjoyed the uniqueness of how Zakk is represented in our world and the way the plot weaves back and forth between the alternating realities so that with Zakk in our world, we are still following the plot in the Dark Palace.

The school community is portrayed well and the conflict this brings is exactly how it is in reality.

The characters are believable and the targeted YA market will be able to identify with them.  I loved the Witch Queen’s servant Googe … obedient but also hungry for power!

The plot is full of action with surprises and allies keeping the reader engaged and wanting to find out where the plot leads to next.

The ending is perfect – the plot is partly resolved and Kiera must go off on another journey.

I have to say that I think Awakenings would translate well for a console game and would make an excellent TV series.

My rating for YA (and adults who like to read about magic and quests):

The Dark Glamour (666 Park Avenue 2) by Gabriella Pierce

Welcome to New York City, where the socialites are witches. Jane Boyle thought she’d met the man of her dreams. But it’s hard to live happily ever after when you realise your new mother-in-law is literally a witch, determined to steal the magical powers you didn’t even know you had. When Jane discovers that the man she fell in love with is a mere pawn in her mother-in-laws cunning plan, she flees. Now Jane is alone and on the run, hiding out in Manhattan. But Jane can’t hide forever… One magical Park Avenue makeover later and Jane is ready to settle the score with her witch of a mother-in-law. In her new guise as Ella the Brazilian beauty, Jane meets the devilishly handsome André. The magical blood that teems through her veins draws her inexplicably towards this mysterious man. But is André all he seems? And can Jane make it into the witches’ den to overthrow the most evil of witches?

Mid-August I read 666 Park Avenue (the first novel in this series) which I enjoyed and recommended for your reading lists. When The Dark Glamour was offered to me to review I jumped at the chance!

When we left Jane Boyle she’d made her decision.  The Dark Glamour opens with Jane living through that decision, which isn’t as exciting as she’d expected.  It’s three weeks after her magical battle with Lynne Doran and Jane finally goes to the safe deposit box that Malcolm organised.  She finds she has access to an endless supply of money … and an ornament that she’s not sure the significance of as it was deposited 15 years ago so before Malcolm knew Jane.

Jane contacts Dee and the magical journey begins.  Hoping to find out where Malcolm is by using the ornament in a spell, the outcome is totally different than her expectations.  Needing to get back into the Doran’s home, Misty (from the Book and Bell) finds a rare magical object that will cause a glamour and last 28 days.  What follows is a journey of twists and turns with Jane as her alter-ego Ella which is full of surprises and danger.

André is a dangerous and dark character.  The scenes with him and ‘Ella’ are tense and full of sexual tension.  Both know they are lying but neither know what is below the lies, which adds an edge of further excitement.  The intimacy with Andre has the wow factor and the domination is exactly right for his character.  I didn’t feel entirely comfortable with one of the scenes but do feel it was necessary in portraying their relationship.

The quest takes ‘Ella’ to London where best friend Elodie is staying with her parents.  We only meet her briefly in 666 Park Avenue so I enjoyed getting to know her and seeing the easy relationship they have with each other.

In the previous story, Jane was pretty much led by everyone else having had a sheltered upbringing.  In The Dark Glamour, she is solo quite a lot of the time and making her own decisions.  Despite her confidence and willingness to confront life, she shares her flaws with the reader which is an endearing quality and makes her very likeable.

Jane’s magical journey through her grandmother’s blank diary is a key scene … when we find out the importance of why things have been arranged and why the protection,  I was shocked!  Having believed all along that Jane had made the right decision I now had to change my perception.  I wondered if ‘Ella’ would be able to turn things around at the party …  The scene in the billiard room was very tense.  The war is definitely about to begin!  I loved the original characters all coming together.  I think Jane, Dee, Maeve and Harris will make a formidable team.  I’m hoping they will be able to use the magic stored in the athame!

Once again there is much to hold the reader’s interest.  The previous key characters take a low profile in The Dark Glamour while Jane is off on her quest and we’re introduced to new key characters.  The danger and tension had me turning the pages and when the layers of the plot unfold to reveal what is at the core … brilliant!

The back story is built in throughout The Dark Glamour so you can read this book in the series as a stand alone.

The next novel in the series The Lost Soul is due for publication 17 Jan 2013.  Can’t wait!

Meg Lytton has always known of her dark and powerful gift. Raised a student of the old magick by her Aunt Jane, casting the circle to see visions of the future and concocting spells from herbs and bones has always been as natural to Meg as breathing. But there has never been a more dangerous time to practise the craft, for it is 1554, and the sentence for any woman branded a witch is hanging, or burning at the stake.

Sent to the ruined, isolated palace of Woodstock to serve the disgraced Elizabeth, daughter of Henry VIII and half-sister of Queen Mary, Meg discovers her skills are of interest to the outcast princess, who is desperate to know if she will ever claim the throne. But Meg’s existence becomes more dangerous every day, with the constant threat of exposure by the ruthless witchfinder Marcus Dent, and the arrival of a young Spanish priest, Alejandro de Castillo, to whom Meg is irresistibly drawn – despite their very different attitudes to her secret.

Meg’s journey opens in the ruins of the old palace at Woodstock.  A full moon ritual is taking place, led by her Aunt Jane and attended by Elizabeth.  A prediction is made and also a warning given.

We find out a little bit about Meg’s background and her leaving her home at Lytton Park to serve Elizabeth.

Alejandro comes onto the scene at a rather inopportune moment for Meg creating a false first impression.  His master has been sent to administer religious instruction to Elizabeth in her forced seclusion at Woodstock.

We meet Marcus Dent after a witchcraft accusation is made against Meg by simple servant Joan.  Sent to investigate the allegation, he offers Meg marriage in return for his protection.  A character that will make your skin crawl …

Alongside the magic and the romance the reader becomes involved in a conspiracy.  This is a time in England where religion is in turmoil – Protestants undercover while the Catholics are in power.  Meg’s brother William and cousin Malcolm want to involve Meg in a plot and unwittingly she gives them exactly what they want.  Betrayed by her father, we go on a tense journey to try and right the wrong.

Meg is a brilliant character.  Still finding her way in the world of 1554, at times unsure of herself, naïve at times and wanting to find a place to belong.  A lot of teens will identify with her!  When she allows the power of her magic full reign she is awesome.  My favourite scene is when Marcus Dent is seeking revenge at the village pond.  Fabulously written.  I had goosebumps!

Alejandro confuses Meg.  At times warm and approachable yet at others cold and distant, she never knows what to make of him.  Is he her ally or her enemy?  I enjoyed watching their relationship develop.

With the fear of discovery of Meg’s talent, some harrowing scenes, the conspiracy and anxiety when Elizabeth is finally called back to court, the obsession of witchfinder Marcus Dent and the enigma of Alejandro, Witchstruck has plenty to engage the YA and adult reader alike.  I’m looking forward to seeing where life will take Meg in the next volume of the trilogy.

Kristina’s stay at summer horse camp is horrible to say the least, and it’s all because Hester and Davina are there as well, making her life miserable. When Hester’s cruel prank goes terribly wrong, it’s actually what sends the three girls back to the magical land of Bernovem.

In Bernovem, Kristina is very excited to see her former friend, Prince Werrien. When he invites her to sail with him on his ship to his homeland Tezerel, putting it simply, Kristina can’t refuse. Reunited with her gnome, dwarf, animal, fairy friends … and best of all, Werrien, things seem like they couldn’t get any better for Kristina. But when Werrien becomes fascinated with an unusual seeing stone, the “Black Shard”, Kristina is haunted by a ghostlike old hag.

Struggling against suspicion, guilt, illness, and ultimately the one who wants to possess her soul, Kristina will see it’s in her weakest moment that she will encounter more strength than she has ever known.

The Black Shard is the second in a trilogy in a magical adventure for the YA genre that begins with The Magic Warble (you can read my review here).

Kristina is at the Tranquil Trails Horse Ranch (owned by Hester’s family) for summer camp.  Davina and Hester are also at summer camp and neither girls recall the magical world of Bernovem.  Still up to high jinx, they talk Kristina into going for a horse ride when they should be mucking out the stables and cleaning the tack.  It’s the prank that they play on the ride which leads to Kristina falling down a ravine … and being caught back in Bernovem.

Kristina bumps into Prince Werrien right away.  It’s his birthday and at the celebrations we get to meet the old characters.  I thought this was a brilliant way to re-introduce them.

Prince Werrien has found some items hidden away in the palace and he shows Kristina.  One of the items is a shard broken from the seeing stone, another is Bernovem’s Book of Prophecy (the front section is still missing and now the back session is missing too) and another the golden goblet. Kristina finds out they will be travelling by sea to Tezerel with the court.

The reader finds out where the back section of Bernovem’s Book of Prophecy is – and also intrigue from a serpent who has creatures working its will.  The first hook for me was the mosquito … what would it be injecting and who would it inject and what part did it have to play?

During the travelling the reader has quite a few adventures and we’re introduced to new characters/creatures while periodically glimpsing the serpent and what it’s up to.

In the Black Shard we find out more about the history of Bernovem.  We learn about the Rainbow Tree, the Great Spirit Yolen and how the Zelbock’s came into existence.

Kristina and Prince Werrien’s romance is stronger (now that they are two years older) and the insecurity and anxiety Kristina feels around him is a reflection of how teens are in real life.

I think there is more of the element of the spiritual with good and evil in this second book.  I enjoyed how Simcox presents this for the YA genre.

The adventures are well paced and the magical world enchanting.  The story just flows.  Once again we have drawings interspersed throughout the story.

I had quite a few surprises at the climax – which I loved!  We are left on a cliff-hanger, not knowing where or how Prince Werrien is while Kristina is starting off on a new adventure with a wizard to find Azaril (who has the front section of the book of prophecy) into the forsaken land of Jalmara.

I would love to see this trilogy made into a movie or TV series.  I think it would be amazing!
